All entering freshmen are required to complete Directed Self Placement (DSP) before registering for their required First-Year Composition (FYC) course. Entering students should complete DSP at least 2 days before attending new student orientation. DSP takes approximately 3 ½ to 4 hours to complete. We understand that this is a lot of time, but our experience shows us that when students take the time to think about what course is best for them, they are likely to do better in that course. We want you to succeed at SFSU, and we think the best way to help you succeed is by giving you the time it takes to make this important decision. You have three course options for First Year Composition: 1)The Year-Long Stretch Program: English 104/105, 2) Composition for Multilingual Students Program or 3) The Semester-Long Accelerated Program: English 114. WIth some guidance from us, DSP will help you decide which of these three options is best for you.
Please Note: If you are required to complete Early Start in English, you will complete DSP as part of your Early Start English class, and you do not need to read this page. Instead, please click here for more information about Early Start http://www.sfsu.edu/~advising/esp/.
