Robert Kohls

Robert Kohls received his B.A. in Philosophy at the George Washington University, M.A. in TESOL at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, and his Ph.D. in Language and Literacies Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE)/University of Toronto.

His research interests include second language (L2) writing, writing teacher education, adolescent L2 literacy, and qualitative research methods and ethics in applied linguistics.

Robert has taught MATESOL courses in principles and practices of language teaching and language classroom observation at the Monterey Institute for International Studies and writing in a second language at OISE/UT. He is also a seasoned L2 language teacher. He has taught English as a second language and English for academic purposes at the Monterey Institute of International Studies and business English at Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania. He has also taught English for Specific Purpose (ESP) in Calle, Colombia and served as a language assessment consultant in Beijing, China.

Robert has presented his research at the American Association of Applied Linguistics (AAAL), American Translators Association (ATA), the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC), English as a Lingua Franca (ELF), Lavender Languages and Linguistics (LLL), National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), Literacy Research Association (LRA), Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and the World Congress of Comparative Education Societies (WCCES).

He has also co-authored several book chapters in Adolescent Literacies in a Multicultural Context, ed. A. Cumming (Routledge, 2014), research roundups on the Modern Language Centre for The Journal of Language Teaching, and articles in Contact Magazine (TESL Ontario) and English in Texas. He has reviewed manuscripts for Teaching in the Two-Year College, The Modern Language Journal, and The Asian Journal of English Language Teaching.
