Sarita Nyasha Cannon joined the English Department in 2006 and teaches courses on 20th-Century American Literatures. She graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with an A.B. in Literature, earned a Ph.D. in English from University of California, Berkeley, and held a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in American Indian Studies at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Cannon’s scholarship has appeared in Biography, Ethnic Studies Review, The CEA Critic, the quint, MELUS, Interdisciplinary Humanities, and Asian American Literatures: Discourses and Pedagogies.  A global citizen committed to cross-cultural exchange, she has presented her work at conferences in Spain, France, Portugal, Japan, South Africa, Tunisia, Morocco, Ghana and Australia. She is the author of Black Native Autobiographical Acts: Navigating the Minefields of Authenticity (Lexington Books, 2021), which analyzes the ways that multiracial people of African and Native American ancestry have represented themselves and navigated questions of racial, ethnic, national and cultural belonging in various autobiographical forms, such as scrapbooks, oral histories, music and photography. Dr. Cannon is also a classically trained soprano who sings with various groups throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
